The words who, whom, whose, which, what, when, where, why and how are used in questions to show what kind of information is wanted.

  • Who said that? (asking for a personal subject)
  • What did he want? (asking for a non-personal object)
  • When will it be really? (asking for a time expression)
  • Why are you crying? (asking for reason)
     Who and Whom are pronouns, and act as subject or object in their clauses.
     When, where, why and how act as adverb.
     What, which and whose can be pronouns or determiners.
  • What do you want? (pronoun)
     What sort do you want? (determiner)
  • Which is mine? (pronoun)
     Which hat is mine? (determiner)
  • Whose is the brown bike? (pronoun)
     Whose hat is this? (determiner)

Wh-questions begin with a question word such as who, how, what, etc. We put an auxiliary or modal verb before the subject or the question.

Wh-word + auxiliary/modal + subject

  • Which is usually used when there is a limited choice of answers.
     E.g. Which of the two cars you prefer-the black or the red one?
   
     Which is also used alone, or before nouns, one/ones or of, to ask about thins, people or animals.
     E.g. Which is you coat?    Which coat is yours?
     Which one do you prefer?  The black one.

  • Whose is used to ask about possession.
     E.g. Whose is that car? It's Rachel's.

  • Who is used without a noun to ask about people.
     E.g. Who do you need to see? The Chef.

  • What is used  to ask about people, things or animals when there is an unlimited choice of answers.
     E.g. What sports event do you like watching?
     What is also used alone or before a noun to ask about things.   
     E.g. What are you looking for? The car keys.
    
What color eyes does he have? Green.

  • When
     E.g. When are they coming? Next month.

  • Why
     E.g. Why are they crying? Because their cat died.

  • Where
     E.g. Where can they play? In the backyard.

  • How is used before an adjective/adverb or alone.
     E.g. How did you get home? By bus.
             How old is Charlie? He's forty.
             How fast can she run? Very fast.
 
  • How often
     E.g. How often does Michael go to the movies?
             Once a month.


  • How long
     E.g. How long have you been studying English?
             Six moths.


  • How long ago
     E.g. How long ago did you graduated from college?
             Five
years ago.

  • How much is used with uncountable nouns.
     Eg. How much milk does she need?
           Very little.


  • How many is used with countable nouns.
     E.g. How many oranges do they want?
             Five.
